About the site design

• This site was designed and written from scratch by myself, Kinders Kinley. I'm so proud.
• The forum began as freeware provided by phpBB and is written in HTML and PHP.
• The site is written in HTML, CSS and JavaScript. If you would like to use any of the code for yourself, please feel free to probe the source.
• Graphics are created using ZeusDraw and Graphic Converter (the same programs that I use to draw and edit Katie + Kin). The current design

Increasing frustration with a number of things led to this redesign:
1. The general squareness of the site's previous look and my previous complete disregard for my graphical design skills, which came out in this design
2. The way Microsoft Internet Explorer redesigns my web sites for me. There's no getting around that entirely (download Firefox), but this one is far better suited to IE's foibles.

Hopefully this one will last the longest yet!

The very original design of the site (hosted on a free hosting site) is lost to history. This is my impression of how it looked. Quite nice, actually, and it had "cool slidy bitty things," but not nearly enough space for the content, which dwelt in one of those two boxes; there was a link to return to the menu, which is the purpose that those exclamation marks served. Version 2 is also lost; it contained some nice ideas that I used in later designs, such as boxes to display the latest updates, but, once again, it was all show and very little room for content.

For version 3, I downsized the site to contain just my journal, since everything else was essentially nonsense. That's the Fat Boy Slim font. I also began to use JavaScript, because changing 400-odd pages when you want to change the site design slightly is ludicrous. There were indeed 415 journal entries between 2002 and 2005, but I've trimmed the archive down now because most of it was, of course, essentially nonsense.

Version 4 was the web site that surfaced when I first bought kinderskinley.com, and the first design to show some real professionalism. Unfortunately, it is also lost. Here's my impression of how it looked. I got tired of a monochrome web site with tiny writing, though, and version 5 emerged...

2007

Version 5 began quite differently (and quite impractically) and evolved. Improvements in version 5 included:
• Menus and a search bar that are always available without the need to scroll around (I really think that more sites should utilise this idea), with the content right at the top of the page
• A search bar that allows you to search all of the main areas of the site
• Lots of space for the content and little space devoted to anything else
• A lovely colourful design : )

2007/08

I loved version 5. I loved it dearly. But different computers and different web browsers handle different web sites in different ways, and mine was a little too freely interpretable. The result of this is that some people visited my web site and found a grotesque mess. Out of this mess was born version 6: simple, streamlined, and still colourful. Simple boredom with that design eventually led to version 7, which was very square and dull and the screenshot of which, perhaps fortunately, I unintentionally deleted.
